John Wesley: Foundations of Methodism - John Wesley (June 17, 1703-March 2, 1791) stands as one of the most influential voices in the establishment and development of Methodism. In our efforts to further our understanding of the founding principles of Methodism, a study of the precepts advanced by Wesley seems invaluable.
Towards this end, the Evangelism Committee of Asbury United Methodist Church will be offering a 10-week class addressing Wesley. The comprehensive syllabus will address Wesley’s lifelong devotion to the church and the principles he developed upon which contemporary Methodism is based.
The class will be taught at Asbury on Thursday evenings from 6:30 - 8 PM. The sessions will commence on February 16th and conclude on April 19th. There is no charge for the class. A small paperback book will be provided at a minimal charge and lecture notes will be handed out at no cost to participants. A sign-up sheet has been placed near the church offices. Please note name and contact information.
Lenten Bible Studies - During the season of Lent, Asbury will offer several opportunities to explore the group study Journey to Hope. Seven Reasons Why Every Christian Should Attend Sunday School - Dr. Paul Chappell, pastor and author from Lancaster, California, has said: “Sunday School is the church organized to fulfill the purpose of the church.” The purpose of the local church is to go, win, baptize, and disciple believers in Jesus Christ. While some churches have increasingly neglected the importance of the Sunday School ministry, it is time for God’s people to renew their faithful commitment to this all important ministry of the local church. Through the Sunday School ministry that we can fulfill what Christ has commanded us to do. Here are seven reasons why every Christian should attend Sunday School. The list was generated by pastor Jonathan Blankenship of Charlotte, NC.
1. Sunday School establishes total involvement in the local church.
2. Sunday School embodies the practice of the Great Commission.
3. Sunday School encourages through small group fellowship and activity.
4. Sunday School embraces what Christ began with His disciples.
5. Sunday School equips the believer for ministry and discipleship.
6. Sunday School enhances our ability to honor the Lord’s Day.
7. Sunday School expresses our love for Christ and His church.
May God help us to commit to the Sunday School ministry of our church!
