Just Older Youth

The Joy Group is our senior adult ministry consisting of "Just Older Youth" here at Asbury.  Ages 55 and older are invited to participate in events.  JOY meets every second Thursday of the month at noon in Slaven Hall for a catered luncheon and program.  Social half-hour starts at 11:30 AM.  The cost is $8.00 per person (paid at the door) and includes lunch, door prizes, a short Bible lesson, spiritual music, and wonderful fellowship.  JOY takes at least five trips each year.  All performances will be matinee.  Sign-up for luncheons and trips, along with more information, are in the church parlor.   The Joy Group is organized by Seniors.   It is open to all members of  the church.  Please join us for Christian growth, fellowship, and activities, and bring a friend!

2012 Trips
Spring Trip:  Friday, April 27, 2012, Monticello - How long has it been since you’ve visited Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home near Charlottesville? An extensive visitor’s center and museum add new dimensions to what you thought you knew about Mr. Jefferson. Join the group for a bus trip that includes a tour of Monticello and a stop at nearby Michie Tavern at 11:30 AM for lunch before the tour. Lunch is a Southern buffet of fried chicken, a wide choice of delicious sides, peach cobbler for dessert, and a nonalcoholic beverage. At Monticello, the group will have time to view the short introductory film and visit the museum before boarding the shuttle to the house for the guided tour at 1:50 PM of the house, gardens, and slave quarters. The total cost for the trip, including the bus, the luncheon (with tax and tip), and tour of Monticello is $59 per person. Please sign up on the trip list in the church parlor as soon as possible and send in your payment of $59 per person to the church office to guarantee your reservation. The bus will leave Harrisonburg on Friday, April 27, at 9:45 AM from the K-Mart parking lot on E. Market Street.

Summer Music: Orkney Springs. We are awaiting the summer schedule to determine the exact date and performance we’ll attend, but it will most likely be during the last weekend of July.

Fall Trip: October 4, 2012, Smith Mountain Lake (Virginia Dare Cruise). Cost for bus and cruise with luncheon will be $68. More information will be forthcoming closer to the date of the trip, but mark your calendar now!

JOY Group Newsletter - The JOY Group sends out a newsletter each month with more details about the luncheon speakers and special trips. Some of our e-mail addresses are no longer working. If you have not been receiving your newsletter or wish to be added to the list, please e-mail Sherrel Hissong at sfhissong@comcast.net or call her at 434-4257. If you don’t use e-mail, please give her your mailing address so you can be added to the USPS list.

Do You Need Transportation? Are you missing out on JOY Group luncheon meetings because you need a ride? If you are, please let us know so that we can arrange a ride for you from someone who lives in your vicinity. Attendees at the luncheons come from all over the Harrisonburg, Bridgewater, and Rockingham County areas, so if we know in advance that you need a ride, we can work out how to get you to Asbury for the luncheon.  Please call the church office for more information.
