Asbury UMC offers two vibrant, inter-generational worship services on Sunday Mornings: one at 8:30 AM and one at 11 AM.
Services are held in our historic sanctuary, beneath awesome stained glass windows. Evening worship services are also offered on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Christmas Eve. And a sunrise service begins the Easter celebration.
Sermons are biblically based, engaging, and relevant for today’s world. The church marks the Christian year from Advent-Christmas-Epiphany to Lent-Easter-Pentecost and through the season after Pentecost. We employ the lectionary to guide us in our Scripture reading, study, and proclamation.
Music of all styles and periods (from ancient chant to contemporary praise chorus) is part of worship here. Children’s, youth’s, and adults’ vocal choirs and hand-bells regularly participate in worship. Congregational singing plays a vital role. The grand piano and pipe organ anchor our weekly services but other instruments are frequently used also. Drama and liturgical dance may also be included.
Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month during both services and Maundy Thursday and Christmas Eve. Since Christ is the host, all are invited to participate in this sacrament; you do not need to be a member of this congregation or of the United Methodist Church.
There are many opportunities for children, youth, and adults to assist in worship leadership by serving as acolytes, crucifers, or Bible bearers, liturgists, ushers, communion servers, and greeters.
Children’s Church is a worship and activity time planned for children ages 4 thru 3rd grade following the Children’s Time on Sunday mornings. A variety of experiences is provided with stories, prayer, games, singing, and crafts and worship. The purpose of this program is to give each child a greater love for Bible stories and to experience the love of God and our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Activity folders are age appropriate and available in either narthex for children ages 4 thru 3rd grade. Each folder contains a book, activity sheets, crayons and pencils, and is to be returned at the end of each worship service.
A Nursery is available during all worship services in Room 205. It is staffed by a regular paid attendant, Meredith Rose, and a team of rotating volunteers. Participants are asked to have the same adult sign in and sign out their child. A beeper is also available upon request.
