Bulletin Announcements
For the week of September 5th:
The Communion Offering for the month of September is ICM. ICM is an ecumenical organization which trains, places, & supports volunteer chaplains in the workplace.
Asbury Summer Hours - The office of Asbury UMC will close at noon on Fridays thru September 3rd.
How many times have you said: “I wish I knew more about the Bible.” Here’s your chance in a New Testament Survey that will be held on Saturday mornings at 8:50 AM in the Francis Asbury Class with Jerry John for 20 weeks starting on Sept. 11th. You will deal with the Facts, the Meaning, and the Application of all the books in the New Testament. The class will be taught simultaneously in the UMC, Stavropol, Russia by Skype. You will get to know some of the Russian participants as they tell about who they are and what they do. Register in the church parlor today and invite a friend to take the class with you.
Which small-group Bible study are you going to join?? Still trying to decide?...just look for the sign-up table in the church parlor for info on Disciple I, II and IV, the Survey of the New Testament, and the Youth Bible Study. All classes begin the week of September 12th.
The Asbury United Methodist Men will be hosting a Small Group Study during the fall. The ten week study will begin in the next couple weeks. We will be using a book titled John Wesley’s Message for Today. We are asking men of our Church to prayerfully consider participating in this small group study, especially if you are not involved in any other bible study. A sign-up sheet is located in the church parlor. Please also indicate the best day/time for you to participate as we have some flexibility as to when this study will meet. We are hoping to have at least two small groups, both studying the same book. For more information or questions please contact the church office.
Support the Mission to Honduras - Five Asbury members are part of a team taking a medical mission to Honduras in October. The team will distribute nearly $9000 in medical supplies to those in need. One way to support this mission is through designated giving in the offering plate.
Are you a patron of our church library? We are asking all members to immediately return checked out books to the marked box in the narthex. Some have been out for a few years and need them returned. This will insure they are available for a library inventory in September.
The CROP Walk to benefit Church World Service will step off on Sunday Sept. 19th at 4 PM. Start organizing your team now! More information to follow.
Moravian Love Feast Committee - In order to prepare for this wonderful celebration on Sunday evening, December 19th, preparations begin in September. Candles must be wrapped; Moravian buns or cookies baked; Servers outfitted; Set up and Clean up teams appointed and More. It takes many people to prepare for the Feast. The sign up sheet is in the Parlor or you may contact Laura Douglass at 434-2836.
Altar Flowers - Are you interested in having flowers put on the altar in memory of a loved one? You can arrange it through the church office at 434-2836. The process is very simple and you can take the flowers after the last service, if you like.
Refugee Resettlement - Thank you for your continued support of our new Harrisonburg neighbors who are arriving as refugees through the Virginia Council of Churches Refugee Resettlement program! Current needs for the program: household cleaning supplies (specific need for cans of Lysol spray at this time), household furniture, home linens (bed linens of all sizes are needed), and personal hygiene supplies. Donations can be placed in the blue box in the parlor.
Food Pantry - “I tell you the truth, what you do for the least of these, you do for me.” HELP FEED THE HUNGRY! Please bring your non-perishable food donations and leave them in the marked box in the narthex each week. Suggested items: chicken noodle or vegetable soup, peanut butter, 100% juices, canned tuna/chicken, pasta, and sauces. Thank you for your help!
Mercy House - While we await repairs and then a new family in the apartment Asbury sponsors, we do want to thank each one of you for all you have given for the apartment and for our families! We are now in need of children's Bibles, as the new chaplain, our own Patricia Hendricks is conducting weekly Bible studies for the residents. We appreciate our UMM giving the adult Bibles. A sofa is still needed for a special church family.
School Supplies - The Outreach Ministry Team will be collecting school supplies for mission kits through September while items are on sale. Haiti had over 1000 schools destroyed during the earthquake. The list of items needed is in the parlor. Please bring items to the box in the church parlor.
